Bike School Ability Levels

Level 1, The Basics: You know how to ride a bike on the road or greenways around town. You enjoy cycling and feel ready to take your skills and experience to dirt for the first time. You would like to learn mountain bike skills in in the beginner area to prepare you for the trails. You’ll learn things like braking techniques to get both front and rear wheels gripping, understand different body positions to maintain balance when the trail isn’t perfectly flat, and use line choice techniques to make it around your first corners. If the group is ready, we’ll progress up the mountain and take these new talents to our most basic green trail.

Level 2, Intro to Green Runs:  You are already a mountain biker and enjoy heading out onto single track at your local trail network – even if you’ve only done it a few times. The basics are now happening without thinking too much, you are comfortable riding over small rocks and roots, and have the skills to control your speed and tackle flat corners while standing up on a bike. You’re wanting to try rollers, berms, loose sections of trail and other novice features on Big White’s green trails – Bumblebee, Prybar and Nessy. You’ll get tips and tactics while tackling these varied trails with the goal of keeping it smooth.

Level 3, Intro to Blue Runs:  You have ridden in a bike park before and want to head to blue trails at Big White. You would like to learn about how to find the flow on trails like Bermslang, Lightning Strike and Ace of Spades. You feel pretty strong going into turns at slower speeds even when the ground is loose and can make your way over small tabletop jumps keeping your wheels on the ground. You’re wanting to find out about the next indispensable building blocks of biking like pumping, intermediate cornering techniques and bike/body separation. The goal is to develop better connection to the bike while the speed increases and the berms get bigger.
