Big White’s First Large-Scale Mural Hints at What’s to Come with The Fat Marmot

Big White Ski Resort has always been about more than just world-class snow and stunning alpine views—it’s about community, creativity, and creating spaces where visitors and locals feel at home. This season, the Inn at Big White is unveiling something new, bold and unforgettable: the resort’s first-ever large-scale mural.

Stretching 900 square feet across the façade of the Inn, the mural is more than just paint on a wall—it’s a statement, a story, and the unveiling of Big White’s newest hot spot, The Fat Marmot.

A Work of Art for the Village

Commissioned to celebrate the launch of The Fat Marmot, the mural was art-directed by Jill McMahon of Frankie & Boyd, illustrated by Tim Mack, and painted by renowned Kelowna muralists David and Jordan Doody. Together, the team has created a design that feels both timeless and fresh—fusing a woodcut-inspired style with bold, contemporary energy.

“Having spent winters here racing and riding powder, it’s an honour to bring our art to Big White,” David & Jordan Doody, muralists. “This piece isn’t just a mural—it’s a homecoming.”

The star of the mural? Gus, the Fat Marmot mascot—a character that radiates cool while representing Big White’s playful side. Gus is surrounded by alpine wildlife, gondolas, the resort’s iconic clock tower, and a lively après patio scene.

“With Gus, we wanted a character that just oozes cool, "explains Art Director Jill McMahon. “The style nods to traditional woodcut prints but is reimagined in a playful, modern way. It’s about capturing the movement, energy, and après vibe that defines Big White.”

Best of all, this artwork is in full view of the Plaza Chair. As you glide through the village this winter, Gus and his ramen-loving sidekick will be there to greet you, setting the vibe before you even set foot inside.

More Than a Mural: Meet The Fat Marmot

The Fat Marmot is the newest creation from long-time Big White locals John and Ana Mooney, already known for favourites like Underground Pizza and Six Degrees Bistro. Their latest venture combines fresh, Asian-inspired noodle bowls with a vibrant après atmosphere. Think steaming bowls of ramen, craft drinks, and a patio that’s perfect for gathering with friends after a day on the slopes.

John Mooney, who has worked in food and beverage at Big White since the late ’80s, describes the vision:

“We wanted to create something that feels both fresh and familiar — a place where locals, staff, and visitors can connect over great food and good times. The mural really brings that vision to life; it captures the spirit of the mountain in a way that makes the space feel alive.”

A New Gathering Place in the Heart of the Village

Murals do more than brighten walls—they spark connections, tell stories, and invite people to look closer. With the Fat Marmot mural, the Inn at Big White is no longer just a landmark—it’s a living canvas that sets the tone for après, dining, and community.

Whether you’re here for the slopes, the food, or simply the atmosphere, The Fat Marmot promises to be a highlight of your Big White experience this season.
